AmeriCorps Project YES, Sept 2005-Sept 2006
AmeriCorps is like a domestic Peace Corps focused around troubled school systems. I was attached to the Vittum Theater, a children's theater in Chicago's Old Town neighborhood. Here I taught two poetry classes to high school students and two arts integrations classes as well as helped build settings for various productions. I also lead my team in two major projects: bringing order to the parent organization's children's library as well as a database of the theater's props and costumes. This was my first introduction to proper databases since both used Microsoft Access
At the beginning of the projects, I absolutely said at some point that I wasn't sure why we couldn't just use Excel for these databases. By the end of both projects, after organizing the entry of more than 20,000 items between the two, I sincerely apologized to everyone about that Excel thing I said a while ago.
